This week on Film Score Focus we're visiting relatively new movies adapted from relatively old television programs. The "small screen" has long been fertile ground for filmmakers to harvest narrative ideas. Sometimes the movie becomes an extension of the actual television series itself while other times the material is adapted into something completely new. We're going to venture through scores which fit the later of these two types. You can already probably name a host of various television shows which have been turned into movies. From a scoring perspective one of the big questions becomes "Did they use the theme from the show?" Sometimes composers do and sometimes they don't. We'll just have to listen and hear what we can hear.

This week on Film Score Focus we're speaking the universal language of the animals...English! The talking animal movie isn't really anything new. The lovable "Mr. Ed" yakked it up on television from 1961 to 1968 and ever since audiences couldn't get enough of talking animals...Well, some can. Nowadays high-tech computer animation is utilized to make any animal say anything a director wants it to say.

This week on Film Score Focus we're yuckin' it up with one of cinema's most lovable losers...Ben Stiller. Although his career is not exclusively composed of comedy films, Ben Stiller has certainly become a household name because of his work in this genre. He's as deft at conjuring up sympathy as he is laughs which makes him an extremely likable actor spanning a fairly diverse crop of films. As diverse as his films are, so are the score that accompany them.

FSF-240 "Conducting The Masters of Suspense" (08/20/10)

This week on Film Score Focus we're allowing film composer and conductor Joel McNeely to lead the Royal Scottish National Symphony in selections of Bernard Herrmann's music for five classic Alfred Hitchcock films. It is widely known that Hitchcock is referred to as the "Master of Suspense" but without Bernard Herrmann actually creating that suspense with his music there simply wouldn't be any.

For this show all of the selections will be re-recordings made in the last decade. Joel McNeely in conjunction with Varese Sarabande Records have taken on the task of recording many of Bernard Herrmann's classic scores.

Also, don't forget to buy your tickets for the first ever Film Score Focus Film Screening at the Alamo Drafthouse. I'm going to give a short presentation on Herrmann's music for NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) and then we'll watch the film in the comfort of Austin's most famous theater. It'll take place on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at 7PM at the Alamo Ritz Theater on 6th Street in downtown Austin. Tickets are $10.

This week on Film Score Focus we're grooving through big city streets in search of the funkiest, hippest, and hardest grooving scores of 1970's urban crime dramas. The groove is something that we really don't hear much of in modern film music. I can't recall the last time I heard a rock solid bass grooving with a kick drum while horns, guitars, or pianos funk and dunk their way up front. It's a lost art.

I dare you to tune into the show this week and try not to bob your head or tap your foot to the beats of these fantastic groove based scores!

Although I don't think this has been a particularly great first half as far as film music goes, there have been some intriguing additions to the literature. This week on Film Score Focus we're going to visit the exotic and mysterious country of Tibet. There are a lot of unique characteristics inherent in Tibetan folk music that film composers love to employ when scoring a film with a Tibetan theme. Sometimes they push these elements to the extreme while others touch on them ever so slightly. No matter how much they lean on Tibetan folk music, it's sure to evoke all of the sounds and images that make Tibet such a unique country.

To get me in the spirit of the trip I've dedicated the show this week to Las Vegas film scores! There's a certain style and flavor that embodies Las Vegas and you don't have to actually go to fully realize how well it's expressed in cinema. So what makes a great Las Vegas film score? High energy grooves, a suave and sophisticated coolness, refined class, and of course a little gritty naughtiness are all ingredients that you'll find the classic Las Vegas film score.
